Story retelling

Before Jesus went back to heaven, he promised his followers they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came on them, and they would tell people about him all over the world.

On the day of Pentecost, the believers were together in one place. Suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind filled the house, and what looked like tongues of fire rested on each of them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages.

Jerusalem was full of visitors from many nations, and each heard the believers speaking in their own language about God's great works! Peter stood up and told them about Jesus. About three thousand people believed and were baptized. The church had begun.

What Christians believe

Christians believe the Holy Spirit is God, living with and in believers to help, comfort and guide them. Pentecost is often called the birthday of the church. Different churches understand some gifts of the Spirit in different ways, but all celebrate this day.

Bible text
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.”
